What is National Honor society?

The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in responsibility and service.

About US

Ms. Bean and Ms. Mellizo sponsor the 2025-2026 Fairview High School chapter of the National Honor Society.

The school chapter inducts members via teacher recommendations (see membership criteria).

Since our meetings are infrequent, members are expected to attend every meeting, and they must complete 20 hours of community service each semester both on their own and with other members of the society. The 20 hours break down into 10 choice hours, 5 knight hours, and 5 NHS project hours. Hours are explained on the membership criteria page.

The Society’s purpose is threefold:
  • To give back to the community with service
  • To propagate important character values throughout the school and ensure that members exhibit exemplary conduct to this end
  • To provide a conduit for aspiring school leaders to realize their goals with volunteers.

Four pillars of nhs

» Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of a 4.0 (on a weighted scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. (SM West National Honor Society)
Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate his/her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward. (Green Hope High School National Honor Society)

» Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. (SM West National Honor Society)

Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to effect change in all aspects of their lives. Some examples of leadership can include, but are not limited to leading group activities in the classroom and in the community, being an officer in a club, being a primary chair or drum major of the band or orchestra, or being the captain of a sports team. (Green Hope High School National Honor Society)

» Service: Service is defined as a student's voluntary actions done on the behalf of and for the benefit of others. These actions are always done without any recognition or compensation for the student. The most essential aspect of Service is to not only continuously contribute, but also to contribute in a positive manner and with much enthusiasm. Fairview's National Honor Society plans to organize at least one chapter service project this year.

» Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. (SM West National Honor Society)
Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions. (Green Hope High School National Honor Society)

philosophy

The Fairview High School chapter of the National Honor Society strives to not only uphold the pillars of scholarship, leadership, service, and character, but to apply these values to our community. In the coming year, the National Honor Society hopes to develop a broad base by serving as an umbrella organization for various Fairview clubs and activities with the goal of fostering an integrated and inclusive school community. National Honor Society also plans to aid and enrich the local community through continued service to specific volunteer organizations. Through this work the National Honor Society aims to become an impactful presence on the school and local level, making visible improvements to the community.

Goals

In order to achieve its philosophy, the National Honor Society sets the goals of mentorship, dedication and pride for its members to uphold.

Mentorship

In order to foster an inclusive and unified school community, positive connections between students are valuable. In keeping with the pillars of leadership and character, National Honor Society members are encouraged to help and act as role models to others in their acts of service. Members will engage in school-sponsored service projects that involve working with others.

Dedication

National Honor Society can achieve its mission of meaningfully impacting the community only with the commitment of its members. Members are expected to contribute actively to the chapter by attending meetings and participating in service projects. Moreover, the National Honor Society hopes that members will bring enthusiasm to their work and go beyond what is expected of them.

Pride

Just as National Honor Society hopes to have an impact on the community, it hopes to have an impact on its members. The Fairview High School National Honor Society Chapter hopes that members will find their experiences to be enjoyable and rewarding. Members should take pride in their work and in the Society. This will make the Fairview National Honor Society a connected, reputable organization that will become a powerful presence and foster a lifelong dedication to service.
